Tradescantia plants are usually grown for their beautiful leaves, which come in different colours and patterns. Some sturdy types are also cultivated for their lovely flowers, with three petals that bloom for several weeks in spring and summer.

Identifying and differentiating between various types of Tradescantia plants can be challenging, similar to other plant species. These plants are often referred to by alternative names, such as inch plants or Purple hearts. Numerous variations exist, such as Tradescantia Fulminensis, Tradescantia zebrina, and Tradescantia albiflora. The most favoured ones come with green or silvery leaves with purple undersides, and some come in pink.

How To Care and Maintain Tradescantia Plant 

• Bright Indirect Light:

Tradescantia plants can tolerate different light levels but need bright indirect light to grow well. Ideally, they should receive about 8 hours of bright indirect light daily. Remember that direct sunlight can harm the leaves and cause the variegated patterns to become less vibrant or fade in places with low light.

• Moderate Water Requirements: 

Keep the soil of your tradescantia plant moist all the time. Water it when the top part of the soil becomes dry, but don’t make the soil too soggy. Furthermore, it is important to prevent the soil from completely drying out. During winter, when the plant isn’t growing much, it’s normal for the Tradescantia to need less water. Check the soil regularly to know when it’s the right time to water it.

• The Best Soil

Tradescantia plants prefer loose, nutrient-rich soil, and you can use a soil medium that retains moisture and allows excess water drainage to prevent root rot. Ensure the soil incorporates organic matter, including peat moss, shredded leaves, and coco-coir. 

It’s best to avoid using soil that has moisture-retaining crystals for your Tradescantia plant. If the soil drains too fast and dries out quickly, we suggest repotting the plant in a mixture of soil with plenty of compost and less material that helps drainage.

• Temperature and Humidity

The Tradescantia plant prefers warmer temperatures. It can well-thrive at room temperature, but as long as it stays between 60-80°F, the plant will be fine. You can also grow it outside during the warmer months but protect it from direct sunlight. Remember to bring it back inside if the temperature drops below 50°F at night.

Tradescantia plants prefer a humid environment to grow. Placing them in naturally damp areas like kitchens or bathrooms is ideal. If you notice the leaves drying out and turning brown at the edges, they need more humidity. You can increase moisture by using a humidifier or placing a tray of water with pebbles close to the plant. This is especially helpful during winter or if you live in a dry climate.

• Feeding Tradescantia Plants:

Tradescantia plants don’t need much fertiliser. When they are actively growing in the summer and spring, you can provide them with a diluted liquid fertiliser, using only a quarter of the recommended strength, once a month. However, it’s best to avoid fertilising them during the fall and winter.
