Care Tips For Climbers Plants 

• Consider the Climbing Habit: Climbing plants can be categorised into two main types – self-clinging and twining varieties. Self-clinging climber plants naturally attach to the climbing surface using aerial roots or adhesive pads, while twining climbers grow by wrapping themselves around poles or trellises, needing a framework for support.

• Securing a Framework for Your Climber: If your climber is not self-clinging, you will need to install a strong and secure framework for it to grow around. This could include horizontal wires, trellises, obelisks, or even growing the climber through a mature plant, depending on your preference and available space.  As climbing plants grow older, they become heavy, so it’s crucial that the support structure is robust and can hold the weight of the mature plant.

• When to Plant: Container-grown climbers can be planted throughout the year as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. However, autumn is often preferred as the soil is warm, allowing some root growth before winter sets in.

• Planting: Ensure the climber is well-watered before planting and the excess water drains away. Place the plant at a suitable distance from the base of the wall or fence, dig a hole, mix the backfill soil with organic matter, and position the climber at the right depth before backfilling.

• Initial Training: Most climbers will need some training initially. Remove any ties from the plant, install a framework if needed, tie the canes and shoots to the supports, and prune any weak or leggy stems not being used for the main framework.

• Ongoing Training and Garden Care: Regularly tie new growth with soft garden twine, as the climber grows taller. Remove canes once the plant has formed thicker, woody, self-supporting stems, and keep the plant well-watered, especially during the first few months after planting.
