There are few better ways to create that dense jungle vibe than through Hanging Basket Plants! It creates a fully encompassing 3D Plant experience. It can also be a really great way to maximise space, adding a burst of green in an other wise dead or neglected space. So we start with some of the finest Hanging Basket Plant inspiration followed by some of the Hanging Plant Species we sell or have sold. Whilst technically most species could be grown in hanging baskets what generally makes the ideal hanging basket plant is its size, a 360 degree growing form and a hanging or climbing nature. Species like Ferns, Pothos, Syngoniums and certain Philodendrons are some of the most popular Hanging Plant species, flipping the bill of all of the above but there are considerably more species that we often don’t consider. So strap yourself in and hang in there (yep, we went there) while we take a squiz down hanging Basket lane. We hope you enjoy and if you find this exploration inspiring don’t forget to share!
Hanging Basket Plant Design Inspiration
Hanging Basket Plant Styles
From a design perspective there are many options for Hanging Basket Plants and a major consideration is the style you’re hoping to achieve. You might also have preferences for living in a complete Jungle or just having more of a minimalist touch with just a few showpiece plants.
Hanging Basket Plants – The Space
Of course, the building itself will play a critical role too, a multi-storied loft space with perfect indirect light is likely to offer a little more freedom than your average 2.4m plastered ceiling so being strategic is important. In spaces with shorter ceilings a critical consideration will be to avoid having hanging plants in high traffic areas so your design might focus more on being up against walls, from shelves or over the back of a couch or over benches where going lower is an option.
Hanging Basket Plants – Sizes
The size of the plant/s will also have a major impact on the design, do you want a huge Macho Fern or dozens of finer plants such as chain of hearts, dischidia, string of pearls etc etc? Again, this might depend on the style you’re going for. If minimalist, one big showstopper might do the job whereas if you want a complete jungle you could have dozens of finer foliage plants hanging from shelves.
Beyond the Hanging Basket
If you’re going for a full jungle perhaps you just want the Hanging basket to be just the beginning and want the vine to grow wildly where you attach it to the ceiling and up and down walls as it grows. For this Pothos, like Devils Ivy are perfect but there are plenty of fast growing vine species such as Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma that could also work.
Designer Hanging Basket Plant Pots
The Hanging Basket pot itself can also have a major bearing on the design. If the Designer Hanging Basket Pot is a feature in itself, perhaps the plant can be more understated. If the plant is a big bushy Macho Fern where you will scarcely even see the pot the focus can be totally on the plant. Click here to view some of our designer hanging basket pots.

Hanging Basket Plant Considerations
Hanging Basket Plant Heights
When designing with Hanging Baskets there are a few important considerations to keep in mind. Firstly the height, you don’t want a hanging basket plant in a prominent spot sitting just at head height clocking you on the head every time you dash from room to room. And for those vertically challenged it’s also important to keep in mind the taller peeps in designing this too. Sure, while it can be sweet revenge for all of those times they can reach top shelves and you can’t, it will probably get old rather quick.
This is not to say hanging plants can’t be hung below head level, up against walls or hanging off shelves or anywhere else where there isn’t through traffic could all be utilised for hanging basket plants. Having having basket plants below eye level actually opens up the options for species that works well as looking from above means they don’t need to be exclusively climbing, hanging or vine species but essentially anything.
Hanging Basket Plant Lighting
Lighting is also an important consideration. Yep plants need light. It can be overcome to an extent with artificial lighting but most indoor plants will do best in bright indirect light. So that dark corner, whilst it might come to life with a plant, the darkness might just suck the life out of the plant. So choose your species wisely to be suited to the lighting conditions.
Hanging Basket Plant Watering
Watering hanging basket plants is another consideration. You can buy specialised watering devices for this purpose but watering above your head in general will come with added challenges so get organised or choose wisely.
