Tips To Keep Houseplants from Drying Out Over the Holidays

For houseplants, there’s no such thing as a Holiday break.

We all need a break from time to time, but how do you water your houseplants while on vacation? You can’t take them with you (seriously, no) and you don’t want to go home with dead plants too. Here are some simple tips to keep your plants well-watered while you enjoy your vacation.

Tip 1

If left in a warm, sunny location, your plants will lose water faster, due to faster
evaporation and consumption. Move them away from a window so they still get some light but aren`t exposed to too
much heat. This way when you come back they will be in better shape!

Tip 2

Group them together. If you group your plants together, they create their own little
microclimate, helping to keep the air around them moist. Life is better with a friend!

Tip 3

Water them thoroughly before you leave. The most important thing to do is to adequately
water the plant before you go on vacation.

Tip 4

Use the damp cloth trick. A little DIY trick you can try is to place a cup or bowl of
water next to your plant, then grab a long piece of cotton cloth or rope. Place one end into the water and the other
end into your potting soil. Your plant should absorb water when it needs it.

Put damp newspaper on the soil. After watering the plants, dip a few newspapers in the
water, then place them in the ground. This will prevent the water from evaporating too quickly and help keep the
soil moist for longer.

Tip 5

Use hydrospikes. Hydrospikes are nifty little devices that you fill with water and then
plug into the soil to grow plants. Your plants will absorb water when they need it. This will stop water from
evaporating so quickly and help to keep the soil moist for longer.

Tip 6

When you return from vacation, don`t panic if your plants look a bit wilted. You will be
surprised at how quickly they recover after being lightly watered. Don’t be tempted to overcompensate and give them
too much water.
