Also known as Blue hibiscus! Originating from the arid regions of Australia, Alyogyne is a flowering plant belonging to the family of Malvaceae that showcases a stunning array of colourful blooms. Previously classified under the genus Hibiscus, but stands apart with its distinctive undivided style. Within this fascinating genus, five recognised species are known, i.e., Alyogyne cravenii, Alyogyne cuneiformis, Alyogyne hakeifolia, Alyogyne huegelii, and Alyogyne pinoniana. It is known for its ability to thrive in various climates, making it a versatile choice for both tropical and temperate regions. 

About Alyogyne

It is a shrub that grows with multiple branches and features stellate hairs covering various parts of the plant. The beautiful flowers grow individually in the spaces between leaves. They come in multiple colours, like lilac, mauve, violet, blue, pink, white, and yellow, often with a dark spot at the base of the petals. The flowers are accompanied by an epicalyx, which consists of 4 to 10 long, thin bracteoles joined at the base. The calyx, or the outer part of the flower, has five lobes. The plant produces fruit with five compartments containing seeds, often covered in soft, fluffy fibres.

One popular variety of Alyogyne is Alyogyne huegelii. It is an erect, fast-growing shrub that spreads with age. This variety typically grows 3 to 6 feet (1-2m) tall and wide. Features palmate, hairy, bright green leaves measuring up to 3 inches long with toothed lobes. Alyogyne huegelii produces solitary, funnel-shaped, satiny flowers in shades of lilac, mauve, or purple, measuring 4 inches across.
