Philodendron micans Introduction

Philodendron Hederaceum, also known as Micans or Velvets, Heart-Leaf Philodendron and Sweetheart Plant is a popular Philodendron Climber and Vine. In tropical settings, they can be grown outdoors where they will be happy climbing up tree trunks where their leaves can develop to be quite large. More commonly though they are a popular houseplant, famous for their iconic velvety heart-shaped leaves. They are fairly easy to care for houseplant handling fairly low-light conditions, grow relatively quickly and can also be propagated.

Philodendron micans Light

Philodendrons Micans are popular due to their relatively easy care requirements compared to many different houseplants. Philodendron micans will be happiest in bright, indirect light but can survive in low-light conditions. In tropical environments, they can handle some direct sun but in drier climates, it is best to avoid direct sun where the leaves may burn. Being a low-light plant they can also survive in very low-light spaces beneath fluorescent lights.

Philodendron micans Watering

During the active growing season in the Spring and Summer keep the potting soil slightly moist, although not soggy.

During the winter when growth is slower, allow the top part of potting soil to dry out completely before watering. Yellow leaves indicate over-watering and brown leaves mean the plant needs more water.

Philodendron micans Soil

Philodendrons Micans prefer soil that drains quickly and provides good aeration to the roots. Avoid anything specifically formulated for a given type of plants such as acid-loving plants or succulents. To improve the drainage rate of the potting soil, you can also add extra perlite.

Philodendron micans Humidity

Philodendron Micans will thrive in houses and environments with higher humidity and will do well in bathrooms if they have sufficient light.

While they prefer high humidity, they’re able to tolerate the low humidity ranges of an ordinary household. Watch for brown leaf tips though, as that is a sign the air is too dry. This can often be a problem during the Winter months when humidity levels are lowest. Bunching next to other plants can help to raise the humidity in their microclimate.

Philodendron micans Design Tips

As a trailing or climbing vine Philodendron Micans are well suited either in hanging baskets or with totems allowing them to climb. Their dark green velvety leaves look particularly good against pink so they will look incredible against a pink wall or in a pink pot. Orange is another flattering colour coming into fashion.
