Where to buy String of Pearls in Australia?

Why we're glad you asked as we do our best to have a steady supply of String of Pearls.

String of Pearls Introduction

Native to South Africa, Senecio rowleyanus is a succulent adored for its nearly spherical leaves, that give the impression of a string of pearls, but green in colour, not dissimilar to peas. It is an extremely common houseplant and an easy-care plant when you understand its requirements but it is poorly misunderstood and almost always killed from overwatering. As a trailing plant with hundreds of consistently spaced ball shaped leaves it can be used to give the impression of movement, like a waterfall. Commonly known by various names like, String of Pearls, String of beads, String of peas, Rosary vine etc, it is a great addition to your list of hanging plants. The species was recently removed from the Genus Senecio to Curio, but still String of Pearls is identified as Senecio rowleyanus in literature and the plant care industry. The plant has trailing stems that arise from weak surface roots and produce spherical leaves, similar to peas. Each vine of Senecio rowleyanus can attain a length of about 90 cm long. The Senecio rowleyanus bear pretty tiny white flowers, during the Spring that smell of cinnamon!! Senecio rowleyanus’s spherical water storage leaves flatten when the plant's moisture content decreases.

String of Pearls Planting

String of Pearls can be planted as houseplant or an outdoor ornamental, as hangings or in flat dishes allowing it to spread as a groundcover like in the wild. Senecio rowleyanus is well adapted to extreme, desert conditions. Its ball-shaped leaves minimize the surface area exposed to dry desert air, alternatively reducing the rate of evaporative water loss. In places with lower temperatures that experience frost, String of Pearls should be placed indoors or organised in a setting that allows them to be repositioned when temperatures drop.

Stem cuttings can be used to propagate a String of Pearls Plant. As they has very shallow roots, new roots are established quite quickly in a stem cutting. You can even try strip some leaves off and place them in the soil (nodes touching the soil). New roots will arise from the nodes facing the soil.

String of Pearls Lighting and Position

String of Pearls prefers bright indirect sunlight. Whether grown as an indoor plant or outdoors, place your Senecio rowleyanus where it will get bright indirect sunlight, 6-8 hours a day. Indoor String of Pearls should be positioned near a window, for maximum indirect sunlight. Morning sun will be fine but afternoon and afternoon sun can be too intense.

Artificial lighting can be a way to satisfy your String of Pearls during darker, cooler months. Senecio rowleyanus prefers an average indoor temperature of about 21°C - 27°C degrees.

String of Pearls Watering

String of Pearls is a low maintenance plant, they require infrequent watering. Overwatering is easily the biggest killer of the String of Pearls Plant, so lean on the side of underwatering. Watering once a month will usually suffice and once every 6 weeks during Winter and cooler months. Overwatering can promote fungal diseases. Water the Senecio rowleyanus when the leaves are flat and allow the potting mix to dry out between waterings.

String of Pearls Soil and Fertilizer

Choose a well draining pot to plant your String of Pearls as they prefer well-draining soil to thrive. Sandy soils mixed with poultry grit or pumice (1:1 mixture) will be a good treat for your String of Pearls. Senecio rowleyanus will benefit from a pot that is wide and shallow and made of clay or ceramic as this allows more space to spread, while providing proper drainage to help avoid root rot.

You should feed your String of Pearls every year with a phosphorous containing fertilizer, preferably with fine gritty gravel for best growth. No fertiliser is required during Autumn and Winter.

We recommend using our Plant food available here.

String of Pearls Propagation

Stem cuttings of 3-4 inches are usually used while propagating Senecio rowleyanus. The shallow roots of the plant gets hold on the soil quite quickly. Stripped off leaves with a bit of node can be also used as propagating material. Mist the cutting slightly till a new plant is established.

String of Pearls Vulnerability to Pests and Diseases

Insects like aphids, mites, whiteflies, and ants are common pests attracted to String of Pearls Plants. Over-watering of String of Pearls can cause fungal attacks like root rot. Keep your String of Pearls in a well ventilated area to keep it fresh and dry. Organic herbicides like neem solution can be used on aphid and mite attacks.

String of Pearls Pruning and Maintenance

Dried branches and over grown branches can be trimmed off with sterilised scissors. If you suspect any rotting in branches of your String of Pearls, try to remove it as early as possible. Regular pruning can give you a bushier String of Pearls Plant.

String of Pearls Toxicity

If any part of String of Pearls gets ingested accidently, it can cause rashes, painful itching, dermatitis and skin inflammation and some moderate gastrointestinal problems. Also, keep your String of Pearls plant away from your pets as it causes anesthesia, drooling, and skin irritation that make them miserable.

String of Pearls Design Tips

String of Pearls is a legendary trailing plant and the bigger and bushier it becomes the better! There aren’t many plants that are better for creating a sense of movement, like a water flowing, so its great to exaggerate this. Although it can be used in hanging baskets with 360 degree growth, we think its best when giving them impression of flowing out in one direction from a pot or basket that can achieve the impression of a spout. They look great in front of white walls or dark walls such as charcoal for a more dramatic impression.
