Where to buy Dichondra Silver Falls in Australia?

Why we're glad you asked as we do our best to have a steady supply of Dichondra Silver Falls.

Dichondra Silver Falls Introduction

Dichondra Silver Falls is a popular trailing plant and ground cover with beautiful shimmering silver foliage. Native to Texas and Mexico, Dichondra argentea is a successor of Dichondra micrantha, which was once popular as ground cover and a grass substitute in the West. Severe infestation of flea beetle pushed Dichondra micrantha out of the picture and Dichondra Silver Falls grew in popularity. The silvery, fan-shaped leaves of Dichondra Silver Falls are attached on just 2 inches tall stem that trail on the ground. It resembles miniature lily pads and its silvery foliage shimmers in the sun. The flowers of Dichondra Silver Falls are less prominent and the former is grown for its beautiful, showy leaves. The Silver Falls Plant is a vigorous grower and needs less maintenance. Roots of Dichondra Silver Falls are surface runners, which makes them ideal for trailing through the ground, wherever soil and moisture is available.

Dichondra Silver Falls Planting

Dichondra argentea is a great option as a low-cost ground cover. They can be maintained alone or can be potted in mixed containers. Other than as a groundcover, Dichondra Silver Falls can beautify your house in hanging baskets, tall containers, or window boxes. If it is planted on a raised bed or stone wall, they will spread out its tiny circular foliages up to 2-4 feet long. If the soil is well drained the silverfall plant can form thick mats, leaving no space for weeds. Cascading over retailing walls Silver Falls can give the lively impression of a waterfall./p>

Dichondra Silver Falls can be introduced to your garden as bedding plants or as seed. If you start out as seed, place it in the seeding mix and cover with a light layer of soil. Moist the setting regularly until the seedlings emerge. Maintain temperature of around 24ºC and high humidity for the best success with seed germination. It will take 1 to 2 weeks for the Silver Falls Plant seedlings to appear.

Dichondra Silver Falls Lighting and Position

Silverfall Plant is a sun lover. It prefers 6 hours of full sun. Availability of more sunlight produces a more compact plant with better silver color foliage. Dichondra Silver Falls grown in the shade will develop greener leaves.

Dichondra Silver Falls Watering

Dichondra argentea being native to Mexico and Texas are sun loving, drought tolerant plant. More often than not Dichondra Silver Falls will be killed by over-watering, rather than under-watering. Though Dichondra performs ok in well-drained soil, they prefer dry to medium well-drained soil. Thus regular watering can be avoided. Water only when the plant becomes dry after previous watering. They are highly tolerant to heat and drought, but young ones are prone to frost damage.

Dichondra Silver Falls Soil and Fertilizer

Dichondra Silver Falls performs well at any soil Ph. Feed your Silver Falls Plant with compound mineral fertiliser high in potassium and nitrogen, every two weeks during growing season (October to March).

We recommend using our Plant food available here.

Dichondra Silver Falls Propagation

Seed multiplication is typically practised in Dichondra argentea. The seeds sown in potting mix should be maintained at 20-24 ͦ C and must be protected from frost. The process should be carried out during late Winter or early Spring.

Dichondra Silver Falls Vulnerability to Pests and Diseases

Mites and caterpillars are the common pests encountered while growing Dichondra Silver Falls. The two-spotted mite causes bronzing to the leaves. Dichondra Silver Falls calls for less water, overwatering can cause root rot. Likewise excess moisture retained among crowded foliage makes way for Powdery Mildew and Southern Blight.

Dichondra Silver Falls Pruning

Pinching the stems to the fourth pair of leaves makes Dichondra Silver Falls luxuriant. Prune every seven days as your Silver Falls grow. To keep Powdery Mildew and Southern Blight at bay, remove the overcrowded leaves.

Dichondra Silver Falls Varieties

Dichondra repens, also known as Emerald Falls or Kidney Weed is as the names suggests, an emerald colour with kidney shaped leaves. Native to Australia and New Zealand it is a great local substitute and works well in hanging baskets and mixed containers. Its leaves are more rounded than ‘Silver Falls’ and it produces a wider but shorter plant. They also tolerate heat well.

Dichondra Silver Falls Design Tips

Dichondra Silver Falls is at its best when it can create the impression of a cascading waterfall, so allow it the opportunity to overflow. So hanging over retaining walls, flower beds, hanging baskets or pots, even green roofs! Beyond the cascading potential another major opportunity for the Dichondra Silver Falls is its striking light silver tone, which can be used as a groundcover as accompanying plant to make the plants around it really pop! It can be a great groundcover for other dry loving architectural plants like Olive Trees, Grass Trees, Cycas Revoluta, Yucca Rostrata, Cacti and Euphorbias among many others.
