The plant family split into two major groups, hard-leaved, which typically grow in deserts and arid environments, mostly found in Africa, notably Madagascar and soft-leaved species which are found in sub-tropical and tropical environments, mostly in South Asia. The Snake Plant at large is famous as an easy care plant, with the most famous species of the family, the Sanseveria Laurentii, known to handle low-light environments all the way through to full sun and can go long stretches without water. Unlike many plants, it also produces oxygen at night making it a popular choice in bedrooms. The Snake Plant tends to have striking Architectural Forms which make it a great low-maintenance feature plant.

Snake Plant Light

Snake plants prefer indirect bright light with some direct morning sunlight. But they can adapt to full sun conditions and survive even in very low light conditions. This wide tolerance makes them a very easy care plant which is very versatile suiting most positions.

Snake plants although very easy care plants can be vulnerable to root rot, so a well-drained soil mixture works best. Pots with good drainage are important and terracotta pots can make a good option allowing excess water to evaporate.

Snake Plant Water

Allow the soil to dry between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to about once every month or whenever the soil feels dry. Generally, err on the side of less water rather than too much. Avoid overwatering and wet feet where root rot can develop.

Snake Plant Temperature and Humidity

Snake plants prefer warm environments and will suffer if exposed to temperatures below 10C (50 degrees Fahrenheit). Place the plant in a place protected from drafts. A temperature range of 20C to 32C (70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit) is optimal. They can be sensitive to frost and will recover slowly so if grown outdoors they’ll be best in a protected spot.

Snake Plant Fertilizer

Feed with a mild cactus fertilizer during the growing season or a balanced liquid slow-release 10-10-10 fertilizer or a 20-20-20 fertilizer diluted to half strength. Do not fertilize in the winter.

These architectural forms, their low maintenance and lighting versatility make them popular with modern homes along fencelines and driveways. The iconic yellow and green of the Sansevieria Laurentii make them well suited to darker pots such as in charcoal grey or steel. But Snake Plants come in a wide array of colours and forms. Sansevieria Masoniana ‘Shark Fin’ has become a popular Indoor Collectors Plants where the wide form is a unique showpiece plant. Others like Sansevieria Black Sword have a muted moody appearance and can go well in a minimalist or modern design setting.

Great plants and great customer serviceI am very pleased with the customer service provided. My plants got delivered to a wrong address (by my mistake) and I wasn't able to get them back. I was sure that I lost my $200 worth of plants, but Gretchen from customer service was absolutely amazing and replaced my order. I was very impressed as I did not expect this to happen at all.
Thank you very much! I will order again!
