Where to buy Giant Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia Nicolai in Australia?

Why we're glad you asked as we do our best to have a steady supply of Giant Birds of Paradise and usually in an array of sizes.

Giant Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia Nicolai Introduction

Big birds in town! Few plants make a Tropical statement quite like the Giant Bird of Paradise, with their tall form and generous lush leaves. They represent great bang for buck, especially if time is on your side as they can be a relatively quick grower and are inexpensive in 200mm pots.

Giant Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia Nicolai Light

Birds of paradise need bright indirect light. These plants grow very tall and need a lot of light to grow. It also needs plenty of light to flower indoors, which is rare. We recommend finding an environment that receives at least 6-8 hours of indirect sunlight each day. Strelitzia may survive in low light, but it will produce smaller leaves and grow slowly.

Giant Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia Nicolai Growing Outdoors

You can plant your Giant bird of paradise outdoors and they’ll thrive especially in Tropical environments but remember to acclimatize it by placing it in a shady or dappled spot for at least two or three weeks before moving it into a sunnier position. They can be sensitive to frost so best to keep them indoors in cooler climates.

Giant Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia Nicolai Food / Fertiliser

Feed with a diluted liquid fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season. Alternatively and especially if outdoors you can cover the soil with a 2.5 cm layer of organic compost. Scrape the compost into the top layer of soil, then water thoroughly! And sit back and see it reach its full potential!

We recommend using our Plant Food available here

Giant Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia Nicolai Water

Giant Birds of paradise, being tropical thrive best with a regular watering schedule. Keep the soil moist during the spring and summer growing season, but allow the soil to dry between waterings during the Autumn and winter dormancy periods.

Take note that salty water can burn its leaves, so although popular around pools if a saltwater pool is conscious that this can have a negative impact. Consider using rain or distilled water to water your Giant Bird of Paradise whenever possible.

Giant Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia Nicolai Humidity

They can benefit from intermittent misting during dry winter months to achieve higher humidity.

Giant Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia Nicolai Temperature

For best results keep air temperatures above 15 degree C. This can be a cold-sensitive plant, and it recovers slowly from frost damage.

Why are the leaves of my Bird of Paradise splitting?

Splitting leaves on the Giant Bird of Paradise is totally normal and natural. The splits are an evolutionary adaptation of the plant that allows wind to pass through the leaves, meaning the leaves themselves don’t function as giant sails. Over time, older leaves develop more splits and can be pruned as new leaves emerge and fill out the plant. If you notice the plant is developing splits rapidly, check its positioning and make sure it is not in a windy spot with draft and that it is receiving adequate light and water. Increasing the humidity around your plant with a humidifier or frequent misting can also prevent and slow leaf splitting.

Giant Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia Nicolai Toxicity to pets

Like most aroids the Giant Bird of Paradise is toxic if ingested by pets or humans.

Giant Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia Nicolai Vulnerability to Pests & Disease

Like most aroids, Giant Bird of Paradise can be susceptible to common pests like mealybugs. Large, juicy leaves and plenty of little nooks to hide pests can attract them. Pests tend to especially target sad plants that have a reduced natural defense, so the best defense is often ensuring that your Giant Bird of Paradise is living its best life!
