Optimum Water Use With CAM Photosynthesis

Sedum plants have a wonderful adaptation known as Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) photosynthesis, which makes them excellently suited for arid environments. CAM photosynthesis allows Sedums to utilise water while minimising water loss. During the night, when temperatures are cooler and humidity is higher, Sedums open their stomata to absorb carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide is converted into organic acids and stored within their cells. During the day, when temperatures rise, and water loss is at its peak, Sedums close their stomata to reduce moisture evaporation. They then use the stored organic acids to complete the photosynthetic process. 

How to Care And Maintain Sedum Plant

The Ideal Exposure

Sedum plants require full sun to partial shade, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Full sun exposure is helpful for compact growth, attractive colours, and abundant flowering. If you grow this plant indoors, place them near a sunny window or provide them with artificial grow lights that mimic full-spectrum sunlight. Adequate light is essential for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light into energy, enabling them to produce sugars and grow. 

Optimal Watering

They are drought-tolerant plants, so allowing the soil to dry out between waterings is best. Depending on the climate and soil conditions, you can water once every 7 to 10 days during the active growing season (spring and summer). Provide deep and thorough soaking to ensure that the water reaches the root zone. Water until you see the excess water draining out of the pot’s drainage holes or until the soil is adequately moistened in garden beds. Avoiding overwatering is important, as excessive moisture can lead to root rot and other issues. 

Ideal pH Soil For Growth

To ensure proper drainage, they thrive in a soil mix consisting of equal parts regular potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite or pumice. The ideal pH range for Sedums is slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0 to 7.0. The soil should be enriched with organic matter or a balanced slow-release fertiliser during the active growing season to provide adequate nutrition. Sedums are adapted to grow in various soil conditions, including poor fertility, but ensuring good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot and waterlogged conditions.

Fertilize Twice a Year

These plants require little to no fertiliser. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser with an N-P-K ratio of 10-10-10. Dilute the fertiliser to half strength and apply it during the active growing season, which is typically in spring and summer, 1-2 times a year. It’s important not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to excessive growth and weak stems. Avoid fertilising Sedums during the winter months when they are in their dormant phase.

Prune For Maximum Growth

Sedum plants are generally low-maintenance and do not require a lot of pruning. It can help to improve the plant’s appearance, encourage new growth, and prevent it from becoming too top-heavy. The best time to prune Sedum plants is in the spring, after the last frost. Cut the stems back to just above a leaf node. This will encourage the plant to produce new growth from the leaf node.
