How to Care and Maintain Golden Barrel Cactus

For good growth and maintenance of the cacti, our horticulturists have made some suggestions; by adhering to these guidelines, you will be able to retain the freshness and brilliance of this magnificent plant.

• Place the cactus in a location with full sunlight; it needs southern exposure. It thrives in bright, direct sunlight, especially during the growing season.
• Golden barrel cacti need well-draining soil. A cactus potting mix is ideal, but you can also make your own by mixing equal parts potting soil, sand, and perlite.
• Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water the cactus sparingly during the growing season (spring to early fall), approximately every 2-3 weeks. Reduce watering in the winter, as the cactus enters a dormant phase, since it can lead to the death of the succulent.
• Choose a pot that provides ample room for growth but is not excessively large.
• Repot the cactus only when necessary, typically every 2-3 years, to provide fresh soil and promote healthy root growth. Spring is the best time for repotting.
• Fertilise sparingly during the growing season with a low-nitrogen fertiliser. Avoid over-fertilization, as it can lead to rapid growth, causing the cactus to lose its compact shape.
• Minimal pruning is needed for Golden Barrel Cacti. Remove dead or damaged parts using sterilised pruning tools.
• To ensure the well-being of your Golden Barrel Cactus, it’s important to avoid humidity and temperature fluctuations. Place it away from air vents, humidifiers, and bathrooms to maintain stable temperatures between 50 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which are ideal for its growth.
• If the cactus is grown outdoors in a colder climate, consider moving it indoors or to a sheltered spot during winter to protect it from freezing temperatures and frost.
