Care Tips For Cereus Cactus Plants

• Placement:

Place your cactus in a high-light setting, preferably near a southern or western-facing window, as they do not tolerate low-light conditions. 

• Watering Pro Tips:

Withhold water for about four weeks in January or February to encourage new growth during the warmer seasons. The biggest threat to these plants is root rot from overwatering, so always check the soil moisture before watering. Cereus Cacti prefer to dry out completely between waterings, especially during the winter, so watering frequency should decrease, sometimes to as little as once a month.

• Routine Maintenance:

Rotate your plant periodically to ensure even growth on all sides, dust the stalks for efficient photosynthesis, and inspect for pests, as it helps catch any issues in the early stages. Cereus Cacti are susceptible to scale, a common houseplant pest. 

• Potting Medium:

Use well-draining, gritty soil for your Cereus Cactus plants. A commercial cactus and succulent mix or a DIY mix of ground fir barks, peat moss, perlite, pumice or vermiculite, and coarse sand works well. Water the mixture before filling the pots to ensure proper absorption.

• Temperature and Humidity:

These cacti prefer low humidity and warm temperatures from spring to fall (70°F to 95°F or 21°C to 35°C). In winter, they can tolerate temperatures as low as 50°F (10°C).
