Care Tips For Rhipsalis (Mistletoe Cacti)

• Ensure your plant is getting adequate light

Rhipsalis prefer medium, filtered light as they get in the shade of a tropical forest. These plants can’t handle too much direct sunlight, especially in summer. So, the morning sun is best. And, if you are keeping them indoors place them in a corner that receives moderate light.

• Water and Humidity

During spring and summer, water your plant often, ensuring the soil remains consistently damp but not sitting in water. Adjust the frequency of watering as the temperature in your house changes with the seasons. Before flowering, reduce watering and allow the top half-inch of soil to dry between waterings. After flowering, only water is enough to keep the soil slightly moist for about three to six weeks. It’s best to use rainwater for watering Rhipsalis, as they don’t like hard water. Additionally, mist your mistletoe or coral cactus daily to counteract the dryness typically found in Northeastern homes.

• Maintain Ideal Temperature

Keep your Rhipsalis warm most of the time, but give it a break after flowering and when setting buds. To encourage flowers, expose them to cooler temperatures for a month or two. Don’t let it get colder than 50°F.

• Re-potting

Use well-draining soil for your Rhipsalis, like a mix of perlite, potting soil, peat, and orchid bark. Repot annually after flowering to keep it healthy, even if it doesn’t seem like it needs a bigger pot.
