Ponytail Palm – Beaucarnea recurvata

The Ponytail Palm, also known as Beaucarnea recurvata or Nolina Recurvata, is a unique and distinctive evergreen shrub native to eastern Mexico. Despite its name, it is not a palm but rather belongs to the Asparagaceae family and is closely related to the agave and yucca plants. The plant is also commonly referred to as the Elephant’s Foot due to its swollen trunk base, which resembles an elephant’s foot.

FAQ

Ponytail palms thrive well in a bright indirect light. Place your plant in the sunniest room of the house, near the window. When growing outdoors it prefers full sun or bright, indirect light. If it develops pale, floppy leaves, gradually move the plant to an area with more light.

Known to be a drought tolerant plant, ponytail plants just need water once every two weeks and make sure to let the soil thoroughly dry between waterings. Allow your plant to soak up water through the drainage hole in the bottom.

Yes, Ponytail Palms can be propagated through seeds or by removing and replanting the offsets, also known as "pups," that grow around the base of the plant. When propagating from pups, allow them to develop a few inches of stem before carefully detaching them from the parent plant. Plant the pups in a well-draining soil mix, and they should develop into new Ponytail Palms over time.

Brown tips on leaves could be a sign of underwatering or overwatering. Check the soil before adjusting watering needs. Make sure that the soil is well-draining as soggy soil can cause root rots. Observe the plant in between watering and cut the brown leaves so the plant can focus its energy to produce new shoots.

Root rot is one of the reasons why a ponytail palm trunk became soft. It can be because of overwatering, it will spread upwards resulting in a mushy trunk. If you have a soft ponytail trunk check its root system immediately. Roots that are white and firm are a sign of a healthy plant. Replant your plant with fresh well-draining soil and place it in a warm area. Change how you water, observe your plant and make sure that you allow the soil to dry before watering. With proper care, your Ponytail Palm can live for many years and bring a touch of tropical beauty to your indoor space. Remember to observe your plant closely and adjust care practices as needed based on its individual needs.

Better than I'd hoped
I wanted two fairly rare plants. Prefer to choose my own of course, but no one had them. Jungle Collective did, online, so despite mixed reviews I ordered them, to pick up from a pop-up pick-up place. Well, the pop-up was cancelled and I couldn't reach anyone to see what was happening. Understandable - this IS a small business, not Flower Power. But they said they'd be in touch so I waited and they were, and the next day the plants were delivered, beautiful and in perfect condition! (I didn't request or pay for delivery.) And when I say the plants are beautiful - I mean beautiful. They're larger than I hoped, well established, healthy and full of leaves, and one has three plants in the pot. They're putting out new leaves already, 3 weeks later. So, excellent plants, very good prices and considerate service. Based on my experience I recommend Jungle Collective without reservation.
