Lomandra is a tiny genus of perennial herbaceous plants of the Asparagaceae family. It has 51 species, all of which are indigenous to Australia, with two additionally occurring in New Caledonia and New Guinea.

The focus of this article will be the beautiful Lomandra Tanika (Lomandra longifolia). Because of its compact leaf structure and dependability, this evergreen native grass has become a garden mainstay in Australia. Lomandra Tanika is a low-maintenance plant with silky fine leaves and lovely little yellow flowers that bloom in Spring. It is ideal for landscaping gardens or as a central piece in your backyard. It’s an excellent choice for borders, specimen planting, or mass planting.

Lomandra Longifolia Tanika Care Tips Introduction

Lomandra Longifolia Tanika Lighting and Position

Your Lomandra will be grateful if you place it in full sun to mild shade. The color of the leaves may vary somewhat depending on the amount of absorbed sunlight, but the plant’s health will be unaffected.

Usually, almost any part of the garden can give ideal growing conditions for Lomandras. This adaptable plant thrives in pots and makes an excellent low border, route outline, or mass planting to replace traditional sod. Lomandra longifolia is an exceptional landscape plant with a tough character and exquisite, transformational leaves. Fortunately, it is also tolerant of frost and drought.

Lomandra Longifolia Tanika Watering

Regular watering is necessary for newly planted Lomandra Tanika in order to settle in and begin forming new roots. If the weather is hot and/or dry in the months after planting, water them once a week to keep them from drying out. Except during extended hot dry periods, the Lomandra should not require much watering once established.

Lomandra Longifolia Tanika Humidity

In terms of humidity, Lomandra Tanika, does not really tolerate humid air, salty breezes, or rich moist soils. It is best suited to Native gardens.

Lomandra Longifolia Tanika Soil & Fertiliser

We recommend that you apply a suitable fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during Spring, Summer, and Autumn to establish new Lomandra Tanika plants and to boost the growth of your young plants. Once established, you can use an organic pelletised fertiliser or a layer of compost in the Spring. Despite its toughness, your plant will thank you if you continue treating it with good fertiliser every 2-4 weeks to keep it looking its best. In terms of soil, Lomandra longifolia tanika thrives in sandy to clay soils. We recommend using our Plant food available here.

Lomandra Longifolia Tanika Extra Tips

In order to keep your gorgeous plant beautiful and healthy we suggest that you prune it 150mm to 200mm above ground if it starts to appear damaged, messy or unattractive. This is best done during the Spring, Summer and early Autumn months. Sometimes, dead leaves can also build up over time and may need to be removed if they become aesthetically unpleasant.

Lomandra Longifolia Tanika Toxicity

How to Propagate your Lomandra Longifolia Tanika

Lomandra Tanika plants can be grown from seed or propagated by root ball division. If you choose to grow them from seed, follow these easy steps:

1. Distribute seeds over the potting mix in a seed tray to start growing.

2. Water the soil regularly to keep it moist, and the seeds will germinate in 4 to 6 weeks.

3. Keep the young plants in partial shade and water them on a regular basis for about a month.

5. Once your plantings are 100mm to 150mm tall, gradually place them in sunlight before transferring them to the ground when they are 200mm to 250mm tall.

If root ball division is your preferred method, carefully dig out a healthy clump and split it with a sharp blade, making sure that all of the plant’s little divisions have robust root systems. Cut the leaves back to about one-third of their original length before planting the clumps in the soil you have prepared.
